A Self-Check for Schools Supporting Special Education Families
Helping Special Education families navigate their journey is not easy. Sometimes small changes can make a big difference. The questions below are designed to help reflect on how a school’s communication and resources are working and if there are any improvements that can be made.
1. Prioritize What Matters Most
- Does your communication highlight the information families need most?
- Is it easy for them to respond and engage with what you share?
Take a moment to evaluate whether your messaging addresses the common challenges families face in the Special Education process. Are you simplifying complex topics to reduce stress and ensure clarity across your website, newsletters, and daily communication?
2. Focus on Accessibility
- Can families easily find answers to their questions?
- Are your electronic resources clear, accessible, and user-friendly?
Consider how content is presented: Does it reduce frustration, or are families struggling to navigate it? Look at materials through the lens of a busy parent. Would they find the information they need quickly and easily?
3. Simplify to Amplify Communication
- Are you using plain, family-friendly language that’s easy to understand?
- Could your current content be more concise or approachable?
Reflect on how communication style aligns with the needs of families. Jargon and overly complex explanations can obscure messages and instructions.
4. Refer to Reliable Resources
- Are you guiding families toward trustworthy, up-to-date community resources?
- Do your resource lists reflect the needs of families in your district?
Families often rely on schools for referrals to external services. Review those lists: Are they comprehensive and relevant, or could they use an update to better support those who depend on them?
